WORKSAFE - WorkSafe's “Back to Basics” campaign

Written by admin
Wed 24th Feb 2010

We announce the launch of the next phase in WorkSafe's “Back to Basics” campaign, "Supervising for safety". This phase will be the subject of specific attention by construction inspectors for the next six months and will focus on promoting and checking that construction sites are effectively supervised.

The "Supervising for safety" phase asks everyone working on construction sites – from principal contractors to apprentices - to know their safety responsibilities and act on them.

A poster titled Site safety. Where do you fit in? has been developed. Copies can be downloaded from http://www.worksafe.vic.gov.au/wps/wcm/connect/wsinternet/worksafe/home/forms+and+publications/educational+material/supervision+on+construction+sites+poster.

When WorkSafe inspectors visit sites, they will expect everyone to know their role.

What will inspectors be looking for?
Inspectors will be looking for signs that safety systems have been established and are implemented. If an inspector ticks more than two of the following boxes, they may issue a notice on the effectiveness of the system that the principal contractor or contractor uses. The boxes include:
Principal contractors
Do all workers have CI cards?
Are all workers inducted to the site?
Do all workers have appropriate licenses for the work they are doing?
Are risk controls outlined in site rules/HSCP and SWMS implemented and followed?
Can the principal contractor or site supervisor respond in a timely manner?
Is the principal contractor or site supervisor contactable?
Is site kept clean and in good order?
Are your work practices safe (eg electrical safety, public safety and safe work at heights)?
Do you have adequate power?
Is any plant appropriate for the job and well maintained?

Contractors
Do all workers have CI cards?
Are all workers inducted to the site?
Do all workers have appropriate licenses for the work they are doing?
Does your crew have SWMS for high risk construction work, and, when necessary, change it to suit the site?
Does your crew follow site rules/HSCP and SWMS?
Does the person who is in charge of your crew know their safety responsibilities?
Is person in charge of your crew available or accessible?

For more information on the "Supervising for safety" phase, go to worksafe.vic.gov.au/construction or call WorkSafe Advisory at 1800 136 089.
